World Environment Day (5-6) this year has come amid countries struggling to fight COVID-19. Complicated epidemics make many people not pay attention to the natural environment is seriously polluted.
According to data from the US Government, the concentration of CO2 emissions in the Earth's atmosphere in many places still reached a record high in May.
This number surprised many when the COVID-19 pandemic was still complicated in many places. While there are many countries that have begun to relax the way to economic recovery.
The study was co-conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.
Accordingly, the CO2 concentration at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii (USA) in May was 417ppm. It is higher than the record of 414.8ppm in 2019. The team also said that it takes up to 6-12 months of social spacing, the CO2 concentration here can be reduced by 20-30%.
Previously, the study published in Nature Climate Change estimated that global emissions could be reduced by 7% by 2020. However, according to Dr. Pieter Tans, NOAA's greenhouse gas monitoring room, even if emissions can be reduced slightly, CO2 density still increases.
The team explained that although global emissions were reduced by 26% during the peak period of COVID-19 epidemic, it was unable to compensate for the carbon emissions of crops and soil in response to temperature, humidity and many other factors.
In 2020, the World Environment Day is chosen by the United Nations as the "Action for nature".
Accordingly, the United Nations encourages nations to commit to preserving nature and biodiversity, through activities to restore severely affected ecosystems.
Some other tasks that the United Nations sets out are: responding to climate change, strengthening food security, protecting water resources. The United Nations calls for the solidarity of many nations in addressing environmental issues for the common future of the Earth.
According to Independent, this year's World Environment Day comes amid many places on Earth "straining" against the COVID-19 epidemic. The complex epidemic situation makes many people do not notice the environment is under pressure: the terrible wildfires in the US, Brazil, Australia; giant swarms of grasshoppers destroy African crops; mass dead coral zones on Australia's coast ...
The United Nations estimates that 1 million species of plants and animals are on the verge of extinction. The pace of extinction is not consistent in many places but is on the rise.
