Researchers in the Netherlands have produced a monoclonal antibody that can curb corona virus in the laboratory. This gives hope for the anti-Covid-19 drug.

Recently, researchers at Utrecht University, Erasmus Medical Center and Harbor BioMed in the Netherlands have published research on monoclonal antibodies that can kill corona virus in cells.

Tests of the scientists show that the antibody is named 47D11. It can target the protein spike of SARS-CoV-2 virus and disable this spike.

According to Bloomberg, in an experiment at Utrecht University, antibodies not only neutralized the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but also the similar virus, SARS-CoV-1. It caused SARS in the early 2000s.

However, these are only laboratory results. They will have to be tested on animals, then on humans to prove their effectiveness and safety, before they can be applied to any medicine.
The team also said that more research is needed to learn about the clinical effects and exact mechanisms that help antibodies fight the virus.

Monoclonal antibodies are synthetic proteins that mimic the mechanism of antibodies synthesized by the body in the immune response so that the body fights viruses and bacteria. Monoclonal antibodies will only target the inactivation of a single pathogen. To create antibodies, the scientists tested the disease on transgenic mice and took the antibodies they made.

After retesting, 47D11 shows the ability to disable the virus. The team then had to modify the antibody type to fit the human body.

"Monoclonal antibodies attack weak spots on the virus's surface proteins. It is increasingly seen as a promising drug with infectious diseases, and shows therapeutic efficacy with many viruses," the team said. The author said.

In addition to immunological diseases, monoclonal antibodies are also used in the treatment of cancer.

According to Reuters, antibody treatments differ from vaccines. The vaccine produces natural antibodies, made by the body injected by the person. The antibody injection method will give the patient antibodies already available. However, this method can still be used for those at high risk of infection.

It usually takes about 2 years for a drug to go from research to licensing and release. However, due to the complicated situation of the Covid-19 epidemic, this process is likely to be accelerated.

Besides, there are still many experts in the world who believe that testing antibodies to humans is a risky decision.
“The cure should be tested and monitored closely before being introduced into the human body. However, finding new treatments is also a positive one in the present.
The more methods available, the closer it is to finding drugs to combat corona viruses. ” Infectious disease expert Ben Cowling from the University of Hong Kong shared.
