Doctor Sleep is a horror film adapted from Stephen King's novels, as well as the "next chapter" of the legendary The Shinning.

There is no doubt that director Mike Flanagan can do it. He knows the real horror material, and it's not the "cheap" type of devil that only scares. Falanagan proved his ability through the masterpiece The Haunting of Hill House, or Oculus.

The Haunting of Hill House

In his view, a ghost can be a memory, a dream, a secret. It is sadness, anger, guilt, or something we want to see. A ghost can therefore be a wish.

That's what he applied to his most recent movie, Doctor Sleep. The film is a sequel to The Shinning - the best horror film masterpiece of all time. It was adapted from the novel by Stephen King.

Doctor Sleep revolves around the character Dan Torrance (played by Ewan McGregor), who is also a scared five-year-old boy with special clairvoyance ability in The Shinning. His whole life he had seen all sorts of ghosts, starting with the Overlook hotel. Some ghosts are just innocent faces, others are what drove Dan and his family to shatter.

However, Doctor Sleep not only talks about Dan's life later on, but also about Abra, who also has clairvoyance. Parallel to that is their confrontation with a cult called the Noose, who "eat" the clairvoyance of children. To defeat this sect, Dan must lead them to the old place - the Overlook hotel, which has haunted his whole life.

The head of the Noose is Rose, excellently portrayed by actress Rebecca Ferguson. She successfully portrayed this horrible villain: in one scene, she seemed sexy, intelligent, and the next one was frighteningly violent. There is a scene where she and her guild brutally murder a child, brutally unbearable for the viewers to be a parent.

Abra is also a nice character. She is easily angry, devious and strong, not merely a teenager with special powers. Once Abra appeared on screen, viewers fell in love with her. Both Abra and Rose seem to "overwhelm" our protagonist, Dan, who seems to hold the most terrible power and mysteries.

As a horror film by the talented Flanagan director, the horror element of Doctor Sleep is also impressive. His film transmits many messages through images and sounds, creating charisma and avoiding boring errors.

The film faced the problem of balancing Stephen Kings' novel with the previous film The Shinning by director Stanley Kubrick. Of course, the director of Doctor Sleep fully knows the material of both talented people who created these horror masterpieces.

While Doctor Sleep is a horror genre, it doesn't just focus on the elements that scare viewers. Flanagan knows how to create ghosts in different ways, so Doctor Sleep's barriers are filled with awe and intense emotions.

As such, director Flanagan has proven that out of all Stephen King's adaptations this year, Doctor Sleep is undoubtedly the best.
