Japanese officials said the country had just destroyed 753 pigs in Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo after an outbreak of pig cholera was detected before being brought into the market.
The destruction of the swine herd was promptly made on September 14 before being transferred to Central Japan for consumption, according to Yomiuri.

The Saitama provincial government also delayed orders from two other pig farms in the area at risk of infection.

Japan in 2018 detected the first outbreak of swine fever in 26 years in the country. The outbreak location was determined in Gifu Province, Central of Japan.

Japan is the 10th largest pork producer in the world with an annual export value of nearly 111 million USD, according to Reuters.

The epidemic detected in Gifu Prefecture is thought to be a cholera epidemic and is unlikely to be transmitted to humans.

Japanese officials say the swine flu detected in the country is not an African swine cholera, a disease that has plagued China's livestock industry in recent years. Pork prices in the country have reached record highs.

For more than a year, China has struggled to prevent the African swine fever from spreading out of control. Since the government announced the first outbreak in August 2018 to date, all provinces across the country have confirmed outbreaks.

The government said up to now, 1.2 million pigs have been culled to prevent the spread of the disease. In 2018, the country consumed 700 million pigs.
