Thanos's predecessor was Thomas Malthus - British political economist.

For someone who claims he wants to help this universe, the things Thanos has made since he appeared so far have only seen annihilation and killing.

Thanos's plan in the Avengers: Infinity War is the realization of this half-universe genocide, to bring balance to everything, to keep this universe from continuing.

And when he reached out to the last infinite stone, Thanos became the most powerful entity in the universe (or at least in the series, in the film Thanos was "nerf" much!). With a snap of a finger, half the cosmic population and half of the superheroes are still loved in the past 10 years into dust.

But why does Thanos believe in the success of this plan? Why was he convinced that this was necessary?

There was a scene like this: Thanos's adopted daughter, Gamora, said that Titan's plan was indeed "crazy."

But Thanos called it "salvation", the only way to free resources in an overcrowded universe. By eradicating half of the universe directly, the target is randomly selected, resources will become abundant again.

This plan has many holes that will make people scratch their heads wondering "why is it so". But Thanos was not the first to worry about the population becoming too crowded and the resources were not enough. We can see how to deal with Thanos's problems to the extreme, so what did Thanos's predecessor think?

Thanos's way of thinking is similar to a theory that British political economist. Mr. Thomas Malthus, said in the book published in 1798, Essay on basic elements of population.

(Thomas Malthus)

Based on population observations in the 18th century, he argued that if people continue to give birth, there will come a time when the amount of food will not be enough for everyone. This will lead to hunger, widespread disease and persistent poverty. Mr. Malthus's way, then being the head of the Church of England, would be a preacher for abstinence, delaying the marriage to give birth to children, especially in the poor community.

"It's Malthus' prototype, and that's over," said David Weil, professor and chief economist at Brown University. "That's not the world we're living in."

Mr. Malthus did not predict that the Industrial Revolution would take place. Technological advances have brought human society to a population of 7.5 billion and continues to increase. Mr. Malthus was worried that there was no more land to cultivate. But we have used fertilizers, machines, crops to be genetically altered so that we can get abundant crops from the soil. Simply put, Thomas Malthus was not so visionary.

"The moment Malthus points out these things is not very reasonable," said Aaron Jonas Stutz, associate professor of human research. The word of thunder transmitted to Malthus's apocalypse came right at the beginning of industrialization, the sanitation system became the norm and the era of vaccine.

"He saw the dim future of mankind, but humanity has found a way out of that cloud."

Unlike Thanos, Mr. Thomas Malthus did not conduct massacre. But his plan also caused much controversy.

In 1834, the British authorities modified the provision of good laws for healthy people. Because "based on Malthus' theory that helping the poor only encourage them to have more children, poverty still fulfills poverty," wrote researcher Michael Shermer in Scientific American.

Also with this argument, in the 1940s, British politicians also clarified the act of not providing food to the Irish during the Irish period without potatoes. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Malthus' doctrine continued to be based on racist biases.

The Industrial Revolution took place.

In the Infinity War, Thanos's goal is more or less another version of the theory that Malthus argues. Besides, the random destruction of the cosmopolitan population is like the dictators' actions throughout the bloody history of humanity. Examples include the massacre of Jews during World War II ...

Those are the cruel solutions that people have come up with since the beginning. This is not a product of Malthus, this is the product of mankind.

Historically, there has been an event similar to the devastating disease consequences that wiped out 30-50% of the medieval European population.

These pandemic survivors have a better life: rising wages, falling food prices, improved quality of life.

But this cannot happen again with today's society. Technology has allowed us to live longer, and we are not limited by the number of available resources. It is also this reason that allows the Earth in the Marvel cinema universe to continue to exist, when vibranium technology from Wakanda supports the globe. People in that society will benefit greatly.

And yet, the random elimination of half of the population could make the geniuses scattered somewhere disappear - a loss for any society.

Thanos's treatment of the problem is quite bad, but the nature of the problem he wants to solve is even in this real world.

As of 2050, the world's population can reach 10 billion and is in the current complex climate change situation. Essential resources such as fresh water will be problematic.

There are some economists who are optimistic that the tax on carbon emissions will reduce pollution. But some scientists are concerned: when the population grows at an unprecedented speed, the animals and plants extinction are similar.

A 2011 study showed that if we were to consume energy at the current level and the world population reached 10 billion by 2050. Our standard of living would be equivalent to the current Ugandan people: 20% of the population numbers live below the poverty line.

If there are 10 billion people and we know that there is a limited amount of resources on Earth. So what is the standard of life you want? Researcher Jeff Nekola - research author on sharing.

In a fantasy movie to entertain like Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos's plan can be seen cruelly. At the same time, it makes the audience think about real issues. What doesn't affect superheroes (certainly revived) but directly affects the lives of our mortals (there is only one network to play the game named life).

Avengers: Infinity War shows us how to solve the problem of a mad man. So what kind of way do we have to deal with?
